David's New Sand Dam and Shallow
Well Project |
|
Location:
Kenya
Sand dams, weirs and subsurface dams
trap semi-annual flood waters and
sediment so that communities can
benefit from these regular rains,
rather than see this valuable water
rush by. As the
trapped water soaks
into the ground,
it replenishes ground water helping
nearby crops and often allowing for
the drilling of shallow wells for
drinking water. |

Status: Funded by
family and friends in Loving Memory of David
J. Coffin
Estimated Project Completion Date:
02/28/2013
This project is in the
early stages of site selection and initial
construction preparation.
During this phase, teams are working to
ensure that the community is mobilized and
ready for the work to commence. They may be
working with them to gather supplies,
prepare the site or organize a local water
committee to oversee the project in the long
term.

Clean water changes lives. Girls return to
school. Women begin small businesses. Men
are no longer too sick to work. Fields are
watered and food supply becomes more
reliable. Health returns and children grow
up to be productive members of their
community.
The cycle of poverty s broken. Lives change.
"When water comes... everything changes."
That's what our driver told us as we drove
from town to town in Kenya. And we see the
change every time a new well brings clean
water.
